On Tuesday, 10 December 2025, the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC) will host a hybrid session focused on the strategic role of geothermal energy in Catalonia’s energy transition. The event will feature Ignasi Herms i Canellas, Head of the Geological Resources Area at the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, and coordinator of one of the working groups of the Catalan Energy Efficiency Cluster (CEEC).
The presentation, titled “Subsoil as an ally for decarbonization: the role of geothermal energy in Catalonia”, will offer an analytical overview of the potential of both shallow and deep geothermal energy to support emission reduction, enhance energy efficiency and promote a more sustainable territorial model.
The session will address:
The current status and outlook of geothermal resources in Catalonia.
Real-world applications in urban planning, industry and building climatization.
The role of geothermal systems within energy policies and ecological transition strategies.
The event is part of the “Geoenergía: Challenges and a Sustainable Future 2025” programme, organised by the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (IGME) on 10–11 December.
