Seminars on Journalism and Energy: How to talk about energy without technicalities

The College of Journalists of Catalonia is organizing, with the collaboration of the Efficient Energy Cluster of Catalonia (CEEC) and Endesa, a cycle of face-to-face and free seminars on journalism and energy to provide communication professionals with tools to help them explain the energy transition clearly and rigorously.

The series "How to talk about energy without technicalities" is aimed at journalists who want to improve their understanding of the sector and have context and practical resources to report on it without oversimplification.

Why energy is a journalistic challenge

Reporting on this area has become more complex than ever. Immediacy often pushes us to reduce a complicated system to a single number and leave out the context that allows us to understand what is really going on. The debate is no longer limited to the price of the receipt or the fight against climate change: it also involves economic security and autonomy in front of international markets.

Transferring this transformation to the public requires avoiding both opaque technicality and simplification, always with a view of public service. Local and regional journalism plays a decisive role here: it is the one that closely covers the effect of infrastructure, generation parks and changes to the distribution network on each territory.

A cycle with a view of public service

Participating journalists will delve deeper into the operation of the electricity sector in Catalonia, the current challenges and the economic, social and territorial impacts of the process.

The explanatory sessions will be combined with spaces for dialogue and debate between professionals. The aim is to better understand the energy system, the weight of the distribution network and the main difficulties from a journalistic perspective.

Optional visits to electrical installations

As a complementary and optional activity, attendees can choose an experiential visit to reference facilities, with an educational explanation by the organization. Everyone will bear the cost of travel.

The planned spaces are the Endesa Distribution Control Center in Catalonia (Barcelona), the Ascó-Vandellòs nuclear power plant (Ribera d'Ebre), the Susqueda (Selva) or Estany Gento (Pallars Jussà) hydroelectric power plants, the Pujalt wind farm (Anoia) and the Vidreres photovoltaic park (Selva).

The territorial calls will be as follows:

Friday October 16: Central Catalonia (morning)

Tuesday, October 20: Girona (morning)

Wednesday October 28: Lleida (afternoon)
