There are already 82,494 electric vehicles on Catalan roads, after the year 2023 closed with 20,412 new registrations. This is indicated by the figures published by the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN) in open data format, which also indicate that although 2023 was the year with the most registrations of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in history , with 1,779 more units sold than the previous year, its market share fell by a few tenths compared to the previous year, to 6.17% (in the case of electrics) and in 3.99% (for plug-in hybrids).
By type of vehicle, 57,156 vehicles are electric, while 24,675 are plug-in hybrids with gasoline and 663, plug-in hybrids with diesel. The so-called 'sport utility vehicles' (SUV) are the vehicle model with the most registered electric or plug-in hybrid units (27,032), ahead of passenger cars (24,421), mopeds (15,136) and motorcycles (11,260). 2023 has been a year in which vans and buses with this type of engine have had a significant increase in registrations, while SUVs have consolidated a high growth rate. On the other hand, there has been a decline in the two-wheeled segment, much more pronounced in the case of mopeds.
Transport is the main energy-consuming sector in Catalonia. For this reason, and with the aim of achieving climate neutrality in 2050, the electrification of the vehicle fleet (and the installation of public and private charging points to provide service) is essential, since makes it possible to increase the energy efficiency of mobility and reduce the presence of fossil fuels in the energy mix. In this sense, the ICAEN works both to encourage the replacement of combustion vehicles with new, more efficient ones, and to promote the installation of charging points.
