Barcelona Energia closed the latest financial year with 16,139 electricity supply points, marking a 22.58% increase compared to the previous period. This growth consolidates the company’s expanding model, which now provides energy to 13 metropolitan municipalities as well as thousands of households and businesses.
Out of the 16,139 supply points, 7,857 are connected to private customers, while 8,282 correspond to public administrations. According to company data, around 82% of the privately managed supply points serve residential homes, with the remainder going to businesses. These figures reflect the project’s ongoing expansion and its growing presence both among citizens and within the economic fabric of the metropolitan area. Since its launch in 2018, the private segment has experienced sustained growth, with an average annual increase of 14%.
“These indicators clearly show that more and more homes and businesses are choosing an electricity supply committed to sustainability, local engagement and strong social values,” said Iu Gallart, Managing Director of Barcelona Energia. “This increasing commitment, combined with the support of local councils, demonstrates that building a public, efficient and participatory energy model is not only feasible, but essential.”
Indeed, Barcelona Energia’s growth would not be possible without the growing involvement of local councils across the metropolitan area. The company currently supplies energy to Barcelona City Council and 12 additional metropolitan municipalities: Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sant Vicenç dels Horts, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Castellbisbal, El Papiol, Sant Just Desvern, Esplugues de Llobregat, Barberà del Vallès, Pallejà, Torrelles de Llobregat and Santa Coloma de Cervelló.
These partnerships enable publicly managed renewable energy to power a wide range of local services and facilities, including schools, cultural centres, markets, public events and essential services. In total, the current reach covers nearly two million people, with 6,813 active supply points and an estimated consumption of 225 GWh. The forecast for the coming year is to extend this reach with the addition of eight more municipalities currently undergoing the integration process.
Over the past year, Barcelona Energia has supplied a total of 313 GWh of clean electricity, preventing the emission of more than 35,000 tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere. Since beginning operations in 2018, the company has delivered over 1,500 GWh of green energy and helped avoid approximately 220,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. These results reaffirm its commitment to the energy transition and the goal of a climate-neutral future.
