With the aim of accelerating and promoting energy rehabilitation in residential buildings, the LIFE-GiDOMUS project was launched this October with an inaugural session held in Olot. The project, which involves the participation of CEEC, is based on the expansion of the successful DOMUS One-Stop Shop (OSS) model developed by the Europace Foundation, which optimizes the experience of homeowners, brings together local initiatives, and promotes the training of sector professionals. Funded by the European Commission’s LIFE program, GiDOMUS will also incorporate a self-sustaining business model that integrates innovative financing methods, ensuring its long-term viability.

Through this OSS model, the consortium aims to support homeowners throughout the rehabilitation process, facilitating and simplifying the renovation process. The service will focus on administrative advice, assisting in the processing of licenses, grants, and incentives; technical advice, with energy diagnostics and habitability assessments, offering a pool of trusted professional technicians; and financial advice, incorporating crowdfunding solutions as a mechanism to involve citizens in the energy rehabilitation of homes.

GiDOMUS will be implemented over the next three years in the province of Girona, with plans for replication in other regions of Catalonia and Spain, coinciding with the arrival of the new European Energy Efficiency Directive.

During this period, the consortium plans to rehabilitate a total of 850 homes with a total investment of 12 million euros through the establishment of 7 OSS offices in the Girona region. In parallel to these actions, the project also aims to serve as a space for training new professionals in the field of energy transition. By the end of its implementation, GiDOMUS expects to have trained around 1,200 professionals.

The consortium is composed of the Energy Efficiency Cluster of Catalonia, the Europace Foundation, the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research, Ecoserveis, Social Innovation for Communities Upsocial, R2M Solutions, Ecrowd Invest, and the National Federation of Energy Managers.

The GarrotxaDomus precedent

In 2020, the Europace Foundation developed an integrated home renovation service called the Domus program, based on the OSS model, which is fully self-sustaining and overcomes the inherent barriers of the process while generating demand.

This service led to the first program of its kind, GarrotxaDomus, which has been operating in the Garrotxa region for four years, serving more than 1,200 users and generating more than 300 energy renovation projects with an average saving of 30% in CO2 emissions and non-renewable primary energy consumption. In this context, LIFE-GiDOMUS was born out of the need to streamline and accelerate the process of energy rehabilitation of homes in the province of Girona, with the goal of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals within the framework of the 2030 Agenda.
