From September 19 to 21, members of the Geothermal Working Group of the Efficient Energy Cluster of Catalonia participated in the Geothermal District Heating and Cooling Days 2023 that were held in Aarhus, Denmark. The head of the Geological Resources Area of the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia, Ignasi Herms, and the researcher from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Jordi García Céspedes, gave the presentation "Modelling of cold networks and heat with 5th generation geothermal energy in Catalonia".

During this presentation they talked about the potential of these networks in Catalonia using geothermal energy close to the surface (SGE). According to Herms, despite the fact that the SGE market in Catalonia is still small, the level of knowledge there is mature enough and the industrial ecosystem make it ideal for the adoption of 5GDHC.

Jesús Teixidor, from SUNO Engineering of Energy Services SCCLP, also participated, who attended with the aim of contributing to the transfer of knowledge that exists at European level in the field of 5th generation networks.

In Denmark, for example, 63% of homes are connected to 3rd and 4th generation networks and they want to reach 90% with compatible 5th generation networks in low density areas, explains Teixidor. A fact that can be replicated in Catalonia, where, according to Teixidor, "the climatic conditions are ideal for developing this type of network because there are very large demands for cold and heat".
