It is no secret that energy is one of the most talked about topics in recent weeks. The increase in registered prices, both in the tariff framework for electricity and in the case of gas, has created a challenge for both family economies and business management.
In this sense, the II Cycle of decarbonisation of the industry, divided in two sessions that have developed the days 25 October in the Chamber of Barcelona and 28 October in the Molí Fariner, the headquarters of Economic Promotion of the 'Martorell City Council, has highlighted the need to manage energy input as a key factor in competitiveness and sustainability in companies. Both sessions were attended by 214 attendees, either in person or online.
Positioning and business claim on the competitiveness of companies in the current energy environment
In the session held at the Digital Hub of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, it was contextualized what the current state of the energy environment is, the reasons that have led us to this point and the business demands and the point of view of the administrations.
Luis Melé, Director of Energy Optimization at OPYCE, introduced the current situation of the tariff framework and the postcovid context. Melé estimated that gas and electricity prices could begin to stabilize from the 2nd quarter of 2022, but at high prices.
For his part, Juanjo Escobar, head of the energy division of the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN), also raised a possible stabilization of prices, also above those we had as a reference before the Covid-19. He stressed that self-consumption and efficiency initiatives by companies must play a leading role in a context that is already volatile. Escobar stressed the importance of generating energy for companies and reducing current energy consumption by a third so that there is a sustainable environment.
Álvaro Luna, director of the UPC's Renewable Energy Electrical Systems (SEER) research center, presented the European framework for energy transition, recovery funds or the European Union's NextGeneration funds: 140 billion will arrive euros in Spain. He also outlined the “España puede” Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which has been planned by the Spanish government.
Ricard Gil, director of expansion and works at La Sirena, presented the company’s experience of frozen products in terms of energy efficiency. Thanks to their new strategy they have achieved a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions and significant energy savings.
Raimon Mariné, president of the Bioenergy Cluster of Catalonia (CBC), Xavier Pastor, former president of the cluster of solar energy Solartys and Joaquim Daura, vicepresident of the CEEC. The low implementation of renewable energies in Catalonia was discussed, as well as the benefits of improving the ecosystems provided by Biomass. On the other hand, 80% of CO2 emissions are derived from energy, which is why it is necessary to change the direction of obtaining energy, opt for renewables and also reduce consumption. To do this, it is necessary to raise awareness in society and the business community about the urgent need to promote a change in consumption habits.
