The Energy Efficiency Directive for Buildings (EU) 2024/1275 sets an ambitious goal: to fully decarbonise buildings and achieve zero emissions by 2050. This challenge marks a new phase in the fight against climate change, highlighting the importance of energy rehabilitation in the existing building stock. Over the next 25 years, the demand for renovations is expected to increase exponentially, requiring skilled professionals capable of designing and implementing energy efficiency improvements in buildings across Europe.
In this context, the European project New Skills for Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NS4nZEBs) serves as a key tool for training and empowering professionals who are set to lead this energy transition. Co-funded by the European Commission’s LIFE programme, NS4nZEBs aims to enhance the skills of professionals involved in the design and implementation of nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEBs), thereby contributing to the European goal of reducing CO₂ emissions from buildings by 2050.
Innovative Training for a Sustainable Future
To meet the growing demand for skilled professionals, the NS4nZEBs project is developing a training platform aimed at installers, engineers, and architects, with modules covering key areas of expertise to help them acquire or update their knowledge. This platform responds to a need identified through an initial survey conducted in the project’s participating countries. A first assessment revealed barriers such as the lack of qualified professionals and the need to keep up with the latest technologies.
Thus, NS4nZEBs offers specialised training in topics such as legislation, nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEBs), building energy management systems (BEMS), photovoltaics, heat pumps and ventilation, energy storage, solar thermal, energy communities, digital skills, and entrepreneurship.
A European Network for Energy Efficiency Training
The NS4nZEBs project network includes partners from six European countries, such as TMK (Belgium), CISB and SEC (Bulgaria), CRES (Greece), CCIAA (Italy), Ecoserveis (Spain), and NUBIP (Ukraine).
This European collaboration network not only contributes to the training of professionals but also fosters dialogue and knowledge exchange to drive the energy transition across Europe. With NS4nZEBs, Europe is one step closer to achieving zero-emission buildings and reaching its climate goals by 2050.
